I've read that New York City muni bond prices barely budged following Mandami's victory.

Is this investor blindness? Or is it a recognition of the limits on the powers of the mayor, who is constrained by the state, the city council and various quasi-gov't entities?

It's usually arrogant to second guess the market. In this case, it feels like they know something I don't.

I would guess it's recognition of the limits on the powers of the mayor and maybe the fact that he's not the mayor ... yet.

Bernstein is not as hyperbolic but a lot of his posts are about defending or advocating for democrats

Yes, very thought-provoking and even-handed. I find Jared Bernstein and Paul Krugman's Substacks to be too partisan and reactionary.

I don't know Bernstein, but read the first sentence of a Krugman column and you can write the rest in your sleep.

When Trump lost 2020 the right doubled down on extremism instead of finding some sensible middle ground. The Democrats, clearly snubbed for the far left looniness in 2024, are doing the same, redoubling their extremist antics. I sort of think there's no one filling the middle ground because there's a general rebellion, mostly unconscious even, about the U.S. Maybe it's the staggering debt underlying the other concerns. Or maybe no one in their right mind wants to be in charge of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

That's an interesting perspective. It seems that being centrist is unpopular in the discourse, if not electorally too.

45 years of predatory capitalism is enough. Let's try enforcing some basic human rights in private equity and business in general. Selling off rural healthcare for parts was bad enough for PE, but now Congress is getting in on the act too. Big Beautiful BS.

Now that science and expertise generally is defunded and marginalized, maybe that is what the idealistic young person who jus wants t make a difference should do, become a starving academic wannabe. :)

I thought a liberal education was to develop critical thinking skills. At least with PT Barnum individuals had the choice of paying to see the side shows.
